First Aid and CPR Requirements in Manufacturing and Construction

Why It’s Essential for Your Workforce

When you think about workplace safety, certain hazards come to mind—machinery accidents, falls, electrical burns, and so on. But one aspect that is often overlooked is the importance of first aid and CPR. Whether you work in construction or manufacturing, being prepared for medical emergencies can make all the difference.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to ensure that their employees are equipped to handle workplace injuries. While OSHA doesn’t mandate that every employee be trained in CPR and first aid, it does require that certain safety measures are in place to protect your workforce.

According to OSHA's General Duty Clause, employers must provide a safe workplace and ensure that employees have access to first aid services if needed. This includes having trained personnel available and maintaining proper first aid supplies. While there’s no specific mandate for universal first aid and CPR certification across all employees, OSHA requires that workplaces have adequate first aid kits and that there is someone trained to administer basic first aid at all times.

In construction, where the risks are often higher, OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926.50(c) states that employers must have at least one person on-site who can provide first aid. However, in environments with more dangerous equipment or chemicals, or in remote locations, CPR and first aid training for multiple employees is not just recommended—it’s essential.

In both manufacturing and construction, accidents are more than just possible—they’re a matter of when, not if. Workers are exposed to a variety of risks, from machinery injuries to falls and chemical burns. Ensuring that at least one person on-site is trained in CPR can mean the difference between life and death.

Take, for example, the story of John, a construction worker who was involved in a serious fall while working on a high-rise building. John fell several feet and lost consciousness. His co-worker, Tom, who had recently completed CPR training, immediately stepped in. Tom performed chest compressions until emergency services arrived on the scene. Thanks to Tom’s quick action, John regained consciousness on the way to the hospital and made a full recovery.

"CPR saved John’s life that day. Without it, I don’t want to think about what could’ve happened," Tom recalled.

This is a real-world example of why training is crucial, especially in environments where the risks are high and medical help may be far away.

What OSHA Requires: A Quick Overview

Here’s what OSHA expects from your workplace when it comes to first aid and CPR:

  1. Adequate First Aid Supplies: OSHA mandates that all workplaces have a first aid kit stocked with essential items based on the size and type of worksite. This ensures that minor injuries can be treated quickly.

  2. Trained Personnel: Employers must ensure that someone on the worksite is trained to handle first aid. For higher-risk jobs, such as those in construction or manufacturing, it’s highly recommended to have multiple employees trained in both CPR and first aid.

  3. CPR and First Aid Training: OSHA doesn’t require every employee to be CPR-certified, but it does stress that employers need to ensure that trained personnel are always available, especially on hazardous worksites.

OSHA’s Standard for High-Risk Worksites

For more hazardous worksites, such as remote construction areas, it’s crucial to have employees trained in CPR and first aid. OSHA recommends that employers offer CPR and first aid training for all employees, especially if emergency services could be delayed in reaching the site.
